We extend a warm welcome to Angela Niforatos.  Angela began exhibiting with West End Gallery in the Spring of 2023.

Since my childhood, I’ve been traveling to the isles of Greece to reconnect with my heritage.  My memories of seeing the Mediterranean for the first time are as vivid as a photograph.  The vibrancy of the water was both shocking and alluring; it didn’t look real at all.  Out in the distance there was a little island with a little church perched precariously upon it.  The marble pebbles rattling around in the surf glistened and beckoned me to take them home.  Although I did fill my pockets with well-worn tokens from the beach, I also took home something else that had a far more long-lasting impression.  These visions of the sea are something I often think about, and I believe have become a part of who I am at my core.  They ingrained in me the importance of the mysteries of our world and even more so the curiosity in which to seek it.

I try and pull textures and colors from my memories of the sea into my work and capture the mysterious nature of it.  I feel that creating closed forms or lidded pieces replicates the mystery of hidden things beneath the waves.  I want my pieces to be tactile and make you want to hold them or peek inside, much like I’m drawn to dip my fingertips in the water.

I want to try and explore other unseen aspects of our world.  I’m amazed at how much there is still to learn about our sea, our natural environment, and our microscopic world.  As I experiment with techniques and learn more about the vast possibilities of my medium, I hope to also learn more about our fascinating planet.
