“This current body of work is my connection to the community around me and I hope the landscapes and florals speak to you in some way.

I spend most mornings painting for usually three to four hours. Before I go to bed each night, I try to study what I have done to properly plan my work for the following morning. In addition to my time spent painting and reflecting, I try to study the work of other artists. An artist’s technique and compositions can be enhanced by connecting with other artists who have explored similar subject matter.

The work of the French and American impressionists, as well as current nationally and regionally known landscape painters, is a source of inspiration and motivation. There is something that moves me in the great work of others. Their work challenges me to attempt to capture beauty, nature, drama or light in ways that are equally successful.

I often ask myself, what would the very best landscape painters find visually interesting in our region? Many hours are spent searching and photographing rivers, lakes, barns, vineyards, clouds, trees and fields for images that might fit the bill. There might be a need to return to a location when the lighting or season changes. I pour over these images during the winter months for subjects that I am drawn to paint, keeping in mind what art lovers who visit West End Gallery might also enjoy.

I recall reading a quote that was very simple, but very profound. Contemporary Illustrator Robert Nicholls stated, ‘I simply enjoy making things for people to look at, it gives me a great sense of satisfaction.’ I hope you find something in this year’s show that you enjoy.”
